Identification of C.I. Solvent Red 24 in hydrocarbon oil mixtures as an aid in oil pollution investigations

Abstract

Mixtures of diesel fuel oil and other hydrocarbon oils are often found in sewers. When such oil mixtures are dirty, and contain used lubricating oils and gas oils, the identification of rebate markers is difficult. A method has been developed in which the gas oil red marker dye C.I. Solvent Red 24 is separated by dry column chromatography using nylon tubing. The dye is identified subsequently by thin-layer chromatography.
