Proton transfers to and from sulphur. Part I. Toluene-α-thiol in dimethyl sulphoxide

Abstract

Proton transfer from and to the sulphur atom of toluene-α-thiol in anhydrous dimethyl sulphoxide has been followed by n.m.r. spectrosocopy under conditions of both acid (trifluoromethanesulphonic) and base (imidazole) catalysed exchange. The different mechanisms are discussed.
