Photoaddition of furan to benzene

Abstract

Furan is shown to undergo a novel photochemical 2,5-, 1′,4′-cycloaddition to benzene; the product readily undergoes reversible thermal, or irreversible photochemical Cope rearrangement to a 2,3-, 1′,2′-isomer.
