Direct observation of vinyl cations in solution

Abstract

In CF3CO2H solution, ethylferrocenes bearing a 2-t-butyl substituent undergo protonation to give the corresponding vinyl cations which, though short-lived, can be observed by 1H n.m.r. spectroscopy.
