Polarographic determination of hydrogen ion activities. Part III. Basic aqueous mixtures of nonelectrolytes

Abstract

Basicity functions of mixtures for aqueous tetra-alkylammonium hydroxides with dimethyl sulphoxide, pyridine, dioxan, and NN-dimethylacetamide have been measured electrochemically using glass and dropping mercury electrodes. In all cases the new basicity function, HGC, has a higher value than the corresponding Hammett type functions H and H2–. It follows from the measurement of HGC in NN-dimethylacetamide–water that two types of complexes are formed: DMA,3H2O and 2DMA,3H2O.
