Proton transfer in some amino-acids studied by the ultrasonic method

Abstract

The rate constants associated with proton transfer at the amino group in several amino-acids has been determined in alkaline solutions using the ultrasonic relaxation method. It is found that the rate at which the hydroxide ion approaches the amino-acid is diffusion controlled and slightly sensitive to steric hindrance. Using the Debye/Smoluchowski/Eigen equations we have also calculated some of the rate constants.
