Electron spin resonance linewidths and electronic structure of the pentacyanocobalt-2,3,5,6-tetrachlorophenyl nitroxide radical ion

Abstract

The variations in width between the different hyperfine components in the e.s.r. spectrum of the pentacyanocobalt-2,3,5,6-tetrachlorophenyl nitroxide radical ion are attributed to modulation of the anisotropic Zeeman and hyperfine interactions by the tumbling of the radical in solution. The linewidths are analyzed to obtain information about the anisotropic magnetic interactions, it being argued that a consistent analysis is achieved if the singly occupied orbital is taken to contain nitrogen 2p and metal 3d components with weights of the same order of magnitude. However, it is pointed out that the interpretation is not unique.
