Tantalum(III)

Abstract

The reaction of tantalum tetrachloride with acetonitrile yields the diamagnetic dimer [TaCl3(MeCN)2]2. From these acetonitrile solutions similar diamagnetic complexes TaCl3(bipyridyl) and TaCl3(o-phenanthroline), and the paramagnetic tris (dibenzoylmethanato) tantalum(III) were prepared. These are the first compounds of tantalum (III) to be characterised.
