The reactions of 1,3-diphenylalk-1-enes with butyl-lithium
Abstract
In tetrahydrofuran, n-butyl-lithium reacts with 1,3-diphenylpropene and 1,3-diphenylbut-1-ene exclusively by proton abstraction. In diethyl ether, both proton abstraction and addition of butyl-lithium to the olefinic double bond take place. In hydrocarbon solutions, cyclisation of the products of addition also occurs, to give substituted indanes.
