Co-ordinative saturation of magnesium β-diketonates

Abstract

Complexes of magnesium β-diketonates with bidentate and potentially chelating ligands have been prepared. Successive trifluoromethylation of the β-diketone has been used to investigate substituent effects on the remaining potential donor sites on the metal. o-Phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipyridyl, ethyleneglycol, ethylenediamine, NN- and NN′-dimethylethylenediamines, NN′-dibenzylethylenediamine, NNNN′-tetramethylethylenediamine, NN′-dimethylpiperazine, and NN-dimethylaminoethanol were used as ligands. 1 : 1 Complexes were isolated for the reaction of o-phenanthroline, 2,2′-bipyridyl, and ethyleneglycol with (i) bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)bis(aquo)magnesium, (ii) bis(trifluoroacetylacetonato)bis(aquo)magnesium, and (iii) bis(acetylacetonato)bis(aquo)magnesium. For the other ligands complexes were isolated with complexes (i) and (ii).
