Formation of nitrogen oxide trifluoride in microwave and pulsed discharges at –196 °C
Abstract
The operation of a microwave cavity and electrodeless discharge cell immersed in liquid nitrogen is described. Discharges in low-pressure mixtures of oxygen, nitrogen, and fluorine produced small amounts of NOF3. Higher yields of NOF3 were produced by a capacitor pulsed discharge between electrodes in a low temperature cell, but yields were very low if a d.c. discharge was used.
