Spectroscopic evidence for co-ordination of thiocyanate and perchlorate groups in copper(II) complexes

Abstract

A series of compounds have been prepared of general formula CuL(SCN)x(ClO4)2–x[L = bis-(1,3-diaminopropane), triethylenetetramine, NNNNNN‴-hexamethyltriethylenetetramine, and 3,3′-diaminodipropylamine; x= 0–2] l.r. and electronic spectra for the complexes were measured in the solid state and absorption spectra and the conductivities of their solutions in methyl alcohol (and where possible in nitroethane). The substitution of a perchlorate ion for a thiocyanate ion favours the co-ordination of the remaining thiocyanate by the nitrogen atom and the resulting complexes are five-co-ordinate. Only the 3,3′-diaminodipropylamine complex appears to have a polymeric octahedral structure with a bridging SCN and a co-ordinated ClO4.
