Nitrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Part IV. The azo-compounds and hyponitrite ion

Abstract

14 N Chemical shifts are reported for azoethane, hexafluoroazomethane, hyponitrous acid, and hyponitrite ion, and are compared with those for azobenzene, the difluorodiazines, and pyridazine. The order of the shifts follows that of the inductive effect of the ligand as it increases the excitation energies (opposed by the inductive effect of the ligand to increase the radius term 〈r–3〉). The azo-compounds in this way resemble the nitroso- and nitro-compounds.

The nitrogen shifts show evidence of the splitting of the lone-pair orbitals in the azo-compounds.
