The role of steric factors in the photochemistry of substituted cyclohexa-1,3-dienes

Abstract

Irradiation of cis-1,5,6-triphenylcyclohexa-1,3-diene gave exo,exo-3,4,6-triphenylbicyclo[3,1,0]hex-2-ene whereas irradiation of the corresponding trans-cyclohexadiene gave the 4-exo, 6-endo-substituted bicyclohexene; secondary steric factors appear to control the direction of the conrotatory ring opening.
