The thermal decomposition of quaternary ammonium hydroxides. Part IV. Rearrangement of the methohydroxides of N-(α-substituted benzyl)-N-methylanilines

Abstract

The rearrangement of N-(α-substituted benzyl)-NN-dimethylanilinium hydroxides (I) to give the ortho- and para-substituted NN-dimethylanilines (II) and (III) has been studied. Radical intermediates are proposed for the intramolecular reaction.
