Phthalazine reacts with dimethylketen to form a 1:2 adduct having an oxazinophthalazine structure (I). The effect of substituents on the site of cycloaddition has been examined. No 1:4 adduct was formed. Quinazoline and 4-methylquinazoline form exclusively 1:4 adducts having di(oxazino)quinazoline structures (IV). Quinoxaline gives an amorphous polymeric product with dimethylketen.
