The formation of malononitrile derivatives in the reaction of tetracyanoethylene with NN-dialkylanilines

Abstract

Bis-(p-NN-dialkylaminophenyl)malononitriles are obtained as their bispentacyanopropenide salts from the reactions of tetracyanoethylene with NN-dialkylanilines. These compounds are the major products of equimolar reactions. Hydrolysis of the ethyl derivative with acid yields the expected malonamide and acetic acid derivatives.
