Kinetic acidity dependence in certain oxidation reactions. Part IV. Oxidation of butane-1,3-diol by quinquevalent vanadium ion

Abstract

A kinetic study of the oxidation of butane-1,3-diol by quinquevalent vanadium ion in sulphuric and perchloric acid is reported. The rate is faster in sulphuric acid and is proportional to the square of sulphuric acid, bisulphate, and hydrogen ion concentration. The plot of the logarithm of the rate, measured in perchloric acid medium of constant ionic strength, against –H0 yields a straight line with a slope much less than unity. The mechanism consists of an attack by the water molecule on the transient acyclic vanadium(V)–diol complex for which kinetic evidence is presented.
