The single-crystal electronic and electron spin resonance spectra of the rhombically compressed complex bis(methoxyacetate)diaquocopper(II)

Abstract

The polarised single-crystal electronic and e.s.r. spectra of bis(methoxyacetato)diaquocopper(II) are interpreted in a rhombically compressed stereochemistry of effective symmetry, D2h, in agreement with the molecular structure. The tentative order of the one-electron energy levels is dz2 > dx2y2 > dxzdyz > dxy, which agrees with the simple crystal-field predictions. A method is given for obtaining the directions of the local molecular axes from the crystal g-values, for a complex containing two non-equivalent molecules in the unit cell.
