Thermal decomposition and spectra of some anhydrous and some hydrated metal chloride dioxan adducts

Abstract

The thermal decompositions of MCl2,DX and MCl2, DX,2H2O (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, and Ca; DX = 1,4-dioxan) and of CuCl2,2DX,2H2O have been studied by differential enthalpic analysis, thermogravimetry, and ‘dynamic reflectance spectroscopy.’ MCl2,DX and NiCl2,DX,2H2O were converted into MCl2 in single-stage reactions, for which ΔH values are reported and discussed. MCl2,DX,2H2O (M = Co, Fe, Mn, and Ca) disproportionates into MCl2DX and dioxan-free compounds, which then decompose independently. The new compound CoCl2,DX,H2O is reported. The spectra of the hydrated compounds are reported from 45,000 to 238 cm.–1. These spectra indicate that the compounds contain six-co-ordinate metal ions with water, dioxan, and chloride all acting as ligands.
