Disproportionation of trifluoromethyl and isopropyl radicals

Abstract

Mixtures of hexafluoroacetone–di-isopropyl ketone were photolysed between 32 and 115°. The disproportionation–combination ratio of trifluoromethyl and isopropyl radicals was measured. Allowance was made for the consumption of the disproportionation product, propene, by trifluoromethyl radical addition.

The disproportionation–combination ratio was found to be 2·2 ± 0·2 and independent of temperature. This value is considerably greater than that found in similar nonfluorinated radicals.

A re-examination of the disproportionation–combination ratio of isopropyl radicals gave a value of 0·61 ± 0·1.
