Studies into the constitution of some group III alkoxides

Abstract

The structures of the alkoxides gallium t-butoxide, aluminium isopropoxide di-t-butoxide, and lanthanum aluminium isopropoxide have been investigated by 1H n.m.r. and mass spectrometry. The 1H n.m.r. spectrum of gallium t-butoxide is consistent with an alkoxy-bridged dimeric structure. Lanthanum aluminium isopropoxide is tetrameric both in the vapour and in benzene solution and probably has the same structure as aluminium isopropoxide despite a very different 1H n.m.r. spectrum. Data for the aluminium mixed alkoxide suggests an unsymmetrically bridged dimeric structure.
