Oxygen-catalysed photocyclodimerization of N-vinylcarbazole in donor solvents
Abstract
Direct irradiation of N-vinylcarbazole in the presence of oxygen produced 1,2-trans-dicarbazylcyclobutane in such donor solvents as acetone, ethyl methyl ketone, or methanol, probably by electron transfer from excited N-vinylcarbazole to oxygen, while photopolymerization occurred in the absence of oxygen.
