Thermodynamics of adsorption of primary alcohols at the liquid-air interface. Part 1.—Heats of adsorption at the quasi-saturated surface

Abstract

The temperature dependence of spreading pressure of the homologous series of primary alcohols C4 to C8 in aqueous solution has been determined over the complete range of bulk concentration. The enthalpy of adsorption from bulk aqueous solution to quasi-saturated surface has been calculated as approximately 2 kJ/mole per —CH2—. There is evidence that, as the temperature is lowered, additional bond formation occurs in a surface saturated with alcohol molecules.
