Structure of Schenck and Finken's ‘malononitrile trimer-(II)’

Abstract

It has been shown that the trimer of malononitrile of m.p. 218°, first described by Schenck and Finken in 1928, and assigned the structure 2,4-diaminopenta-1,3-diene-1,1,3,5-tetracarbonitrile by Junek and Sterk in 1967, is, in fact, ammonium 1,1,3,3-tetracyano-2-cyanomethylpropenide.
