Bromination of 3-methoxyfluoranthene

Abstract

Bromination of 3-methoxyfluoranthene in acetic acid yields 2,8-dibromo-3-methoxyfluoranthene, the structure of which follows from its oxidation to 6-bromo-9-oxofluorene-1-carboxylic acid, and synthesis from 3-bromo-fluorene-9-carboxylic acid. 8-Bromo-3-methoxy- and 8-bromo-3-methoxy-2-nitro-fluoranthene have been prepared. Unsuccessful attempts to synthesise 2-bromo-3-methoxyfluoranthene are described.
