Alkali-metal complexes. Part I. Derivatives of 8-hydroxyquinoline, isonitrosoacetophenone, 1-nitroso-2-naphthol, nitrophenols, and anthranilic acid

Abstract

Compunds of general formula ML,nHL where M = an alkali metal have been obtained, by reaction between HL and MOH, in ethanol. The product obtained may depend upon the relative concentrations of reactants. The compounds described are as follows. (i) If HL = 8-hydroxyquinoline, n= 1 for Li, Na, and K, n= 2 for K, Rb, and Cs. (ii) If HL = isonitrosoacetophenone, n= 1 for Na, K, Rb, and Cs and n= 0 for Li, Na, K, and Rb. (iii) If HL = 1-nitroso-2-naphthol, n= 1 for K, Rb, and Cs and also n= 0 for all five metals. (iv) If HL =o-nitrophenol, n= 2 for K and Rb, n= 1 for Cs and also n= 0 for all five metals. (v) HL =o-aminobenzoic acid, n = 1 for K, Rb, and Cs. (vi) If HL = 2,4-dinitrophenol, n= 2 for Cs, n= 0 for Na, K, Rb, and Cs. (vii) If HL =o-nitrobenzoic acid, n= 1 for Rb and Cs, n = 0 for K.

The adducts dissolve with partial dissociation in N-methylpyrrolidone. Conductivity and spectral observations suggest complex formation in classes (i), (ii), and (iii), i.e.[ML(HL)n]°, and confirm that class (viii) is an acid salt M+HL2. Interpretation is not unequivocal for classes (iv), (v), and (vi).
