Concerning the preparation of the µ-amido-µ-superoxo-bis[bis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III)] complex and the identity of the product obtained on reaction with iodide

Abstract

Existing methods for the preparation of the µ-amido-µ-superoxo-bis[bis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III)] complex give a product which is contaminated with as much as 20% of a second product believed to be the µ-amido-µ-nitrito-bis[bis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III)] complex. This second component is not readily removed by recrystallization, and its presence has made it more difficult to identify the products of redox and subsequent interconversion reactions. A procedure for obtaining a pure sample of the µ-amido-µ-superoxo-complex, absorption maxima 465 (ε 533 ± 5) and 686 nm. (ε 485 ± 5), is described.
