The reaction of 9-fluorenylmethanol with base: a carbanion mechanism of β-elimination

Abstract

In aqueous solution, base-catalysed β-elimination of 9-fluorenylmethanol is accompanied by reversible formation of a carbanion, which is shown to be an intermediate.
