Ultra-violet absorption spectra of GeI and SiI

Abstract

A new ultra-violet band system has been photographed in absorption during the flash photolysis of GeI4. The frequencies of the band heads are given by ν= 32022.7+312.7 (v′+½)– 0.95(v′+½)2– 246.1(v″+½)+ 0.50(v″+½)2 cm–1. A similar system of bands observed in the flash photolysis of SiI4 has band heads represented by the formula, ν= 32378.4+472.4 (v′+½)– 0.91(v′+½)2– 360.5(v″+½)+ 1.01(v″+½)2 cm–1. Consideration of the parameters of the above expressions shows that the bands are probably due to the B2Σ–X2Π½ transitions of GeI and SiI, for which no spectra have been previously reported.
