Reaction between chlorine dioxide and nitric oxide
Abstract
The reaction between chlorine dioxide and nitric oxide has been studied in a fast-flow system at total pressures near 1 mm Hg and at 294°K. Under conditions when atomic chlorine is removed heterogeneously, the mechanism of the reaction is described by [graphic omitted] with k2/k1=(0.30 ± 0.05), and k1 5 × 1011 cm3 mole–1 sec–1. For systems in which kw is small, chlorine atoms produced in reaction (2) remove further chlorine dioxide according to the fast reaction, Cl + OClO → ClO + ClO (3) The rate constant k1 is large for a molecular reaction of low exothermicity.
