E.S.R. studies of ion association. Part 4.—Mechanism and rate of sodium ion exchange reaction in solutions of m-dinitrobenzene sodium and sodium tetraphenyl boron

Abstract

Analysis of the electron spin resonance spectra of solutions of m-dinitrobenzene-sodium, and of t-butyl-m-dinitrobenzene-sodium, before and after the addition of sodium-tetraphenyl boron, indicates that in the mixed systems the paramagnetic complex takes part in a cation exchange reaction in which the incoming cation goes to the uncomplexed nitro-group. Approximate rate constant data are presented for the reaction of the t-butyl-substituted compound.
