Biphenylenes. Part XXI. Synthesis and reactions of mono- and polyethylbiphenylenes

Abstract

The synthesis of 2-ethylbiphenylene and its reactions with electrophiles are described. Monoacetylation and mononitration occur at positions 3, 6, and 7, and diacetylation occurs at positions 3 and 6, as well as at 3 and 7. Dibromination likewise occurs at positions 3 and 6, and 3 and 7 to give an inseparable mixture. 2,6- and 2,7-Diethyl-,2,3,6-triethyl-, and 2,3,6,7-tetraethyl-biphenylene have been prepared and some of their reactions are described.
