The proton magnetic resonance spectra of some benzo[b]thiophen derivatives

Abstract

Attempts are made to correlate the chemical shifts in the 100 Mc./sec. 1H n.m.r. spectra of forty-two benzo[b]thiophen derivatives with the substituents present in the molecule, and the relationships are rationalised where possible. Coupling constants are also recorded, and their dependence on bond order, and on other factors is discussed. The changes in the chemical shifts and coupling constants when the benzo[b]thiophens are oxidised to the 1,1-dioxides are recorded and discussed.
