The diffusion coefficients of the tri-iodide ion in aqueous solutions

Abstract

The diffusion coefficients of the iodide ion in 0·01M-, 0·5M- and 2·0M-solutions of potassium iodide containing dissolved iodine have been determined using radioactively labelled iodide ion.

The only polyiodide ion indicated in the 0·01M- and 0·5M-solutions is the tri-iodide ion which is stable up to 40°. There is only slight evidence for the existence of higher polyiodides in 2·0M-solution.
