The heat of oxidation of ferrous ions with hydrogen peroxide
Abstract
The heats of oxidation of ferrous ammonium sulphate and ferrous perchlorate have been determined by their reaction with hydrogen peroxide in a solution calorimeter. For the reaction 2Fe2++ H2O2+ 2H+→ 2Fe3++ 2H2O, ΔH=–69·8 ± 0·4 kcal./mole. The third ionization potential of iron in aqueous solution, i.e., Fe2+(aq)→ Fe3+(aq)+ e–, is 115·5 kcal./mole.
