Rate of dimerisation of gaseous benzyne

Abstract

The flash photolysis of phthalic anhydride vapour results in the formation of benzyne and subsequently of biphenylene. The rate constant of dimerisation of benzyne has been determined directly, from the rate of appearance of biphenylene, as (4·6 ± 1·2)× 109 l. mole–1 sec.–1. This is in accordance with calculations based on a transition state having free internal rotation about the bond connecting the two benzyne moities.
