The radiolytic oxidation of propan-1-ol

Abstract

The main products of the radiolytic oxidation of propan-1-ol have been identified as hydrogen, propionaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide, propionic acid, formaldehyde, and ethane. The yield of hydrogen is lower and that of propionaldehyde three to four times higher than in deærated propanol. The yields of propionaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide are higher and that of propionic acid lower in air-saturated than in oxygen-saturated solution. The results indicate a short chain reaction and a mechanism is suggested to explain the observed effects.
