Pyridine reacts with WCl4 and WCl4(CH3CN)2 to form initially WCl4py2, which has markedly different X-ray, magnetic, and spectral properties from those reported previously for compounds of this formula, and which are shown to contain impurities. Under more vigorous conditions, WCl3py2 is formed.
