Hydrogen yields in the γ-radiolysis of 1,4-dioxan and dioxan + water mixtures
Abstract
Yields of hydrogen from γ-irradiated pure dioxan are found to be lower than previously reported, viz., 1.26 compared with 2.1. Addition of water increases this yield to 2.45 and if D2O is used the extra hydrogen appears as HD. Hydrogen atom but not electron scavengers reduce G(H2) from pure dioxan, whereas the extra yield of hydrogen from aqueous dioxan can be inhibited by electron scavengers. Reaction mechanisms involving cations are suggested. It is concluded that the yield of electrons G(e–)= 2.2.
