6-Phenylazocholest-5-en-3β-ol: the so-called 3β,5α-dihydroxycholestan-6-one phenylhydrazone

Abstract

The orange obtained product from the reaction of phenylhydrazine with 3β,5α-dihydroxycholestan-6-one, described in the literature as the phenylhydrazone, is shown to be 6-phenylazocholest-5-en-3β-ol. The same product results from other 5α- and 5β-substituted cholestan-6-ones; the intermediate phenylhydrazones are isolable for the 5β-compounds.
