Ionic dissociation of 4-substituted 2,6-dichlorophenols

Abstract

The pK values of 4-X-2,6-dichlorophenols (X = Me, H, Br, Cl, MeCO, CN, CHO, NO2, and CO2) have been measured in water at 25° by potentiometric titration. For dissociation of 2,6-dichlorophenols, ρ is 17% larger than the value for phenols. This result provides further evidence for steric inhibition of solvation in 2,6-disubstituted phenoxide ions.
