Product distributions resulting from nitration of various methylbenzenes in three nitrating systems have been determined by gas chromatography. The additivity principle does not predict successfully the experimental product ratios. A value of ρ for acetoxylation in nitric acid–acetic anhydride mixtures is obtained.
