The magnetic properties of some vanadium(IV) complexes

Abstract

The magnetic susceptibilities of three hexachlorovanadate(IV) and three oxotetrachlorovanadate(IV) complexes have been measured in the temperature range 80–300°K. The results are compared with the theory for a 2T2g ground term perturbed by spin–orbit coupling, ligand-field components of axial symmetry, and an orbital reduction factor; yielding estimates of these parameters. The splitting of the 2T2g term varies between 150 and 300 cm.–1 for the hexachloro-compounds and 1000 and 3000 cm.–1 in the vanadyl complexes. The magnetic properties of the vanadyl complexes are consistent with published molecular orbital calculations for such species.
