Hexahalogenometallates(III) of titanium, vanadium, and chromium

Abstract

Pyridinium hexahalogenometallates(III), [C5H6N]3[MX6], where M = Ti, V, and X = Cl and Br, have been prepared and characterised. Attempts to prepare tetraethylammonium salts of titanium in methyl cyanide gave [NEt4][TiX4,2MeCN]; thermal decomposition of these salts gave [NEt4][TiX4] species which appeared to contain polymeric anions with six-co-ordinate rather than tetrahedral titanium. The spectra of these salts and related species have been measured and they are discussed.
