The reaction of benzene with aluminium chloride
Abstract
The volatile products from the reaction between aluminium chloride and boiling benzene are shown to be principally mono- and di-phenyl-alkanes or -cyclohexanes. One product isolated has proved to be a ketone formed by oxidative rearrangement from hydrocarbon precursors. The structure proposed for this ketone is based on ultraviolet, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance data.
