The hydroxylation with hydrogen peroxide–osmium tetroxide of five 2,3-unsaturated glycopyranosides has been studied chromatographically. The preparation of methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-2,3-didehydro-2,3-dideoxy-α-D-hexosides by treatment of methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-2-(or 3)-deoxy-3-(or 2)-toluene-p-sulphonyl (or nitrobenzene-p-sulphonyl)-hexoside with soda-lime has been examined.
