The biosynthesis of folicanthine

Abstract

DL-[2-14C]Tryptophan fed to Calycanthus floridus plants yields radioactive folicanthine. Unambiguous degradation of the alkaloid shows tryptophan to be a direct precursor. Seasonal variation of the alkaloid is reported.
