Alkyl hydrogen sulphates. Part II. The hydrolysis in aqueous acid solution
Abstract
Oxygen-18 tracer studies were carried out on the hydrolysis of sodium methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl sulphates in aqueous perchloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions. The reaction proceeds by sulphur–oxygen bond fission in acid solution and carbon–oxygen bond fission in alkaline solution. An A-1 mechanism is proposed for the hydrolysis reaction in aqueous acid solution.
