Rates of methylation of 1-naphthoxide ions

Abstract

Rates of methylation of 3- and 4-substituted sodium 1 -naphthoxides with methyl iodide in azeotropic ethanol have been measured at 40°. 4-(–M)-Substituents have enhanced electron-withdrawing effects compared with those exhibited in methylation of phenoxide ions.
